Warehouse Management System (WMS)

Support and record warehouse processes with information that aligns with the shop floor.

Back

A Warehouse Management System, abbreviated as WMS, is software that supports warehouse processes and records inventory movements. The system links items, locations, and orders to activities such as receiving, storage, replenishment, and shipping. Capabilities vary by package; a WMS can operate standalone or as part of a broader ERP system.

On the shop floor, a WMS can assign tasks to employees via scanners and record completed actions immediately. Proper configuration requires reliable item master data, identifiable locations, and clear procedures for exceptions. Data exchange with other systems must also be accurate, ensuring that orders and inventory statuses do not diverge.

A suitable WMS can improve inventory visibility, traceability, and process control. It makes information available more quickly and can reduce manual administration. However, software alone does not resolve unclear working methods: the value comes from appropriate process design, careful implementation, and employees who know how to work with the system.
