Inventory Management

Keep the right items in stock without tying up unnecessary capital.

Back

Inventory management encompasses all decisions and activities aimed at keeping items available in the right quantities. It is about balancing customer service with the costs of holding inventory, such as storage, financing, and obsolescence. Inventory accuracy is a prerequisite: effective ordering rules only work when the records are correct.

In production and logistics, you determine when and how much to order or produce for each item. In doing so, you consider consumption, lead times, minimum order quantities, and uncertainty in demand and supply. Reservations, shelf life, and obsolete items also require attention. Not every item requires the same approach.

Good inventory management helps minimize shortages and unnecessary surpluses. You prevent capital and warehouse space from being tied up in slow-moving items while key products are out of stock. Regularly reviewing inventory parameters against real-world practice creates a better balance between availability, costs, and risk.

What is Inventory Management?
