Visual management

Make goals, performance, and deviations immediately visible, so your team knows what needs attention and can adjust in time.

Back

Visual management is a working method that makes goals, agreements, performance, and deviations visible at a glance. It has roots in industrial work organization and gained a prominent place within the Toyota Production System and Lean. The premise is simple: employees should be able to see the objective, the current status of the process, and when action is needed, without extensive searching or inquiring.

In production and logistics, visual management is applied, for example, using daily stand-up boards, floor markings, shadow boards for tools, inventory indicators, and signals for malfunctions. A team board can show how safety, quality, delivery reliability, and productivity compare to agreed targets. During a brief daily stand-up, the team discusses deviations and determines who will take on which action. The information must be up-to-date, understandable, and relevant to the employees working with it; a board without follow-up is merely decoration.

Applied effectively, visual management makes problems visible sooner and reduces ambiguity regarding priorities and responsibilities. Teams can respond more quickly, coordinate work more effectively, and follow up on improvement actions in a targeted manner. It also increases ownership because employees have direct insight into their performance and influence over subsequent steps. The result is better control over daily operations and a solid foundation for continuous improvement, provided that signals actually lead to action.

What is Visual management?

Visual management makes the desired and actual state of a process instantly recognizable with clear boards, markings, and signals.

When do you use it?

Applicable to daily stand-ups, performance monitoring, inventory management, and workplace organization. Connect real-time visual information to clear standards, responsibilities, and follow-up actions.

What are the benefits?

Faster detection of anomalies, better alignment, and increased ownership. Teams can make more targeted adjustments and follow up on improvement initiatives.
