Lean methodology

5S

A practical method to organize every workplace safely, clearly, and predictably.

5S is a practical Lean method for a safe, well-organized, and efficiently arranged workplace. The method originates from Japanese manufacturing and gained international renown through the Toyota Production System. The name refers to five steps: sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain.

In production and logistics, 5S helps to logically organize workstations, warehouses, and tools. Unnecessary materials are removed, required items are given a designated place, and deviations become immediately visible. Employees determine the standards together and make maintaining them part of their daily routine.

This yields more than just a tidy workplace. Properly applied, 5S reduces search time, unnecessary motion, and errors, while improving safety and job satisfaction. The result is a more stable operation with less waste, higher productivity, and a solid foundation for continuous improvement.

What is 5S?

5S stands for sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain. The method removes what is unnecessary and gives everything that is needed a designated place.

When do you use it?

Use 5S when search time, unclear locations, and inconsistent working agreements slow down daily flow.

What are the benefits?

Less search time, a safer workplace, and a visible standard that teams can maintain themselves.
